Historical Background

“Georgie Porgie” is believed to be about George Villier, the first Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628). Notorious for his affairs and suspicious behavior, he was disliked by most of the court as well as many commoners. Most of his antics were tolerated due to his very intimate friendship and rumored affair with King James I (1586 – 1625).
